This was my first experience using charcoal to draw real object. We spent about three 3-hour in-class sessions drawing some round shapes and I think it turned out pretty well!
The process involved lightly shading in the areas AROUND the objects. Since the objects are white, we actually had to fill in the shadows and the black cloth it’s sitting on first. It’s a real hard task to learn to draw “shapes” instead of outlines. It’s also a real hard task to just learn how to use these new tools based on charcoal.
While this first attempt took a long time and was a bit sloppy, I gained a lot of experience — enough experience to draw my next one in about one hour.
